The Windows XP operating system can be purchased on a CD for installation on your computer, or you can buy a computer with Windows XP already installed. If you have a computer that does not have a disc or floppy drive it is still possible to install Windows XP using a Local Area Network. For the installation to be successful, a computer on the network must have a working disc drive and your computer must be connected to the network.

      Insert the Windows XP installation disc into a computer on the network with an available disc drive. If a Windows setup window opens, close it. Create a new folder in the C drive.

      Right-click the new folder, then select "Sharing and Security" from the pop-up list. Click "Share This Folder On The Network", then click "OK".

      Click "Start", then "My Computer" and right-click the disk drive. Select "Explore" from the list. Navigate to the "i386" folder and copy the contents to the new folder. Log in to the computer in which you want to install Windows XP.

      Click "Start", then "Run" and type "cmd" into the open box. The Command window will open. Type "NET USE X: \\COMPUTERNAME\SHARENAME" at the command prompt, where "COMPUTERNAME" is the name of the computer with the installation files and "SHARENAME" is the name of the folder containing the installation files. Press the "Enter" key.

      Type "X:\i386\winnt /s:X:\i386" where X is the actual hard drive letter. Press "Enter'. The Windows XP installation files will copy to the computer without the disc drive. When all of the files have transferred, the Windows XP setup screen will open.

      Press the "Enter" key, then follow the instructions from the Windows XP setup wizard to install the software. For example, agree to the Microsoft license terms and select a time zone. Once the installation has completed, the computer will automatically restart and launch Windows XP.
